Mentor - "Jobs in Life"

Updated: Mar 8, 2022

There are many different jobs in your life besides professional ones. In professional jobs you start at entry level. You have a boss or maybe even many, depending on who you work for.

You clock in everyday and if you decide to, you can prove yourself by working hard and earning promotions/different job titles in your professional career. That being said, you have many different jobs in your life besides professional ones.

So how do you move forward and earn different roles in life? Who are your bosses if you are not at work?

In my personal life, I like to see my “bosses” as my mentors. It's important to have a mentor in life and just like having many bosses throughout your career, you will have many mentors throughout your life. Your mentor is usually someone you least expect, someone who shows you how to guide yourself through your “jobs” in life. They may be someone who gives you advice when you are moving out for your first time. Or someone who lends help teaching you about financial burdens and advises you on how to overcome them. A mentor's role is to teach you, advise your decisions, and train you how to get through life just like a boss in a professional job would train someone the basics.

You don't get to pick your mentors, sometimes they just appear. So do your mentees. If life was a professional job, getting a promotion or new titles would be when someone finds you as their mentor.

You get to use your life experiences to teach and guide someone who needs guidance or someone to educate them.

Mentees can appear anywhere; work, school, and even in your own family or friend group. In my life I have been a mentor to many. Watching your mentee find their own pathway is a very endearing/accomplishing feeling.

There are many different jobs in your life besides professional ones. You will have many trusted advisors help guide you through the journey. You will also have the job of teaching your experiences to the people who find you along the way. You will be successful at any type of job if you work hard, care about what you are working on and experience it fully.
